Papers from the Isabelle Sayers collection, circa 1886-1980 (bulk 1920-1980).

The papers were created and gathered by Sayers as she assembled a collection of early disc and wax cylinder recordings, phonographs, and related equipment that was donated to the Library of Congress between 1981 and 1987. Included in the papers is correspondence between Sayers and collectors, experts, and dealers; lecture and other notes; a diary; newsletters, journals, programs, pamphlets, and other printed materials relating to music, recordings and phonographs; ephemera; and photographic prints, negatives, and slides. Frequent or prominent correspondents represented in the papers include Harlan and Grace Kishpaugh, L. Brevoort Odell, Duane D. Deakins, Lawrence McKinley Marken, Lewis G. Green, Clarence A. Ferguson, and Jim Walsh. Materials relating to vaudeville performer Elsie Janis are also included.

Isabelle S. Sayers (1914-1982) was an avid collector of early recordings and audio equipment. Her primary interest was in rare items, particularly those from 1884 to 1905 of the early sound recording era.
